Bug Description

"Eable Wireless" is greyed out in Quantal Alpha 2 Ubuntu Desktop AMD64 on Ideapad s205.
Looks like the RT3090 isn't recognized by rt2800pci driver

There has been a lot off problems with the RT3090 chip and the open source RT2800PCI driver. Is it possible that the driver does not support RT3090 anymore?

There are unfortunately no option to disable UEFI in the BIOS, and the AHCI to IDE responds with an error if i try to change it.
To me the problem in the provided link are that win7 and win8 can not get shutdown, suspend and WiFi to work if windows is installed to boot as UEFI system, but will work if windows is installed to boot from a legacy system.

How does Quantal boot the live session from USB stick?
I have tried both from USB stick created with "Startup disk creator", and "Unetbootin"

lspci sees the RT3090 chip, and the RT2800 driver gets loaded is it network manager that does not recognize it?

Did you see the same problem in Ubuntu 12.04? Or did this problem just appear in Quantal?

@ Thomas Hood.
There are no doubt that this is a new problem that has appeared in Quantal. (on top of others)

In Precise and Oneiric there are a conflict with "acer_wmi" (875659, still open), and the built in open source driver in Ubuntu have a network speed that is below 70Kb/sec. (896582, still open)
Once, (after my last post and only once! - I tried) booting live session from an USB stick made with Unetbootin, there where Wifi enabled that could establish connection. I started three heavy downloads at once to get an impression of network speed( to check bug 896582). The network speed was not, as in Precise and Oneiric below 70Kb/sec. but very unstable going and up and down between blocked and 40Mb/sec.

Are you able to reboot with the Precise linux kernel? If so then please try that and see if that fixes the problem. If so then we know it's a driver issue.

I have now installed Quantal on a partition on my harddrive, and it has changed the situation, so that now Quantal recognizes the Wifi chip and are able to enable wifi and I can connect to a router.
Data trafic are very unstable, the speed are going up and down from being blocked to full speed (5Mbit/sec my connection).
What can i do to determine the quality of the data transfer?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.5kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag(Only that one tag, please leave the other tags). This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Which fix the problem permanently, but since the upgrade to Kubuntu 12.04 64bits, the problem came back.

I also encounter this bug on my eeepc 1001AH, i've upgraded to Quantal two days ago and the wifi connection woesn't work anymore at all, it tries to connect but the authentication (with WPA2) always fail.
I confirm that it might be a kernel bug, as i've keeped my previous kernel and the wifi works normally with it (3.2.0-33) but not with the actual one (3.5.0-18), both of them loads the rt2800pci module to operate the device.

WIth the last kernel (3.5.0), wpa_supplicant logs that :
SME: Trying to authenticate with xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx (SSID='XXX' freq=2452 MHz)
Nov 5 01:56:22 localhost wpa_supplicant[4189]: wlan0: Trying to associate with xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx (SSID='XXX' freq=2452 MHz)

Nov 5 01:56:25 localhost wpa_supplicant[4189]: wlan0: CTRL-EVENT-DISCONNECTED bssid=xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx reason=2

And with 3.2.0 :

for me, Wifi still does not work, although I followed these steps here:

http://forum.ubuntuusers.de/topic/lenovo-s205-wlan-langsam/?highlight=rt2860sta#post-4483632

After reboot, I looked again up in my Terminal and also wifi refuses to connect. The hardware-switch is activated ( so no hardblock),
and Terminal shows this:

andrea@andrea-CR500 ~ $ gksu gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

hi people,

I found my way out of the problem:
I had to wipe the rt2800pci from blacklist.conf and then as second thing: the WLAN-key here at my home had been changed and I had a wrong key in my documents!! Now since that, my WLAN has come back to work!!

Let's see, how long this thing will remain like that!! For me, problem is solved!!
