If you're using nVidia or ATI/AMD proprietary drivers, you do not have to turn off 'sync to vblank' or anything of the sort. It won't fix the issue.
What will, however, in my experience is exporting the "CLUTTER_VBLANK=none" environment variable to your .profile.
