On karmic, I just upgraded everything:

Alsa 1.0.21
Kernel 2.6.31-16
nvidia 190.42 drivers

And I still have no hdmi audio. aplay -l shows no digital output at all:

This is really really annoying. I don't like having to boot windows just to get hdmi sound.
