Isn't it a problem due to the lost internet connection?
personally, I have problems when the internet connection is lost (suspend, server error, (long taking) wifi reconnection, etc). T solve this problem:
 * click File -> Work offline
 * click File -> Work online

and the connection to the IMAP server is established again. (the missing reconnect option is another bug/issue/wish).
If this indeed solves your problem as well, I think the Release Note needs to be changed, as reconnecting is less 'severe' than restarting akonadi!
