Bug Description

Attempting a clean install of Ubuntu 12.04 from beta-1 AMD64 alternate ISO image as a VM (under ESXi 4.1) behind a corporate firewall fails on the step where it starts to try to install packages.

Network setup was manual with static IP address, netmask, DNS servers and domain properly specified. Also specified proxy settings, including account and password, as used for installs of previous versions (10.04, 8.04, 11.10?) of Ubuntu off the alternate amd64 ISO disk image.

Note: Install of Ubuntu 12.04 from beta-1 AMD64 desktop ISO image succeeded under same environment.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/963636/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

Having a similiar problem with the daily build from 2012/04/03 I comment here, as this report misses information from which I could judge if it's exactly the same problem.

Alternate install of the amd64 iso went very fine, but it once stated a fail during 'choosing and installing packages' (no further reasons given).

This was no blocker though, as restarting this very step from the step menu seemed to solve the problem (no further errors). Now the system is installed and works perfectly.

Are there any log files I could provide you to help find out about the problem?

At the time the bug hit, retrying the failed install step did not resolve the problem. The program did not "crash" or present anything other than the failure error message at the top level (of the alternate install menu screens). On the day of the failure, I tried at least two times and failed all times. Yet, at the same time, an install from the desktop ISO image (to a full disk install, no encryption) worked.

I tried to repeat the install yesterday from the alternate CD image, and instead of failing, it succeeded.

I have been trying the standard install with full disk encryption (over LVM), at the time of the failure. Yesterday, I tried installing both to the disk with full disk encryption (using LVM) and a regular full disk install (no LVM and no encryption). Both worked without errors, succeeding in using the us.archive.ubuntu.com mirror. Maybe something was out of sync with the mirror I reached at the time of the failure. Or maybe a network glitch getting out past the corporate firewall. I don't know.

If it happens again, what log files would you like me to try and grab? Feel free to point me to a web page listing how to obtain the information you want while running from the alternate disk installer's commands. I will need to use sftp to transfer any log files to another system in order to review before possibly sending along.

Bah, tecnically you can open a tty open with nano the file /var/log/syslog and save it to a usb, bat as this issue seems fixed. probably it was just something not reproducible.

Oh, I just discovered that the installation syslog can be found in /var/log/installer/, pretty handy; attaching mine, but it seems to be a CD I/O error (complaining first about I/O errors, than about wrong hashes). The error is at Apr 3 16:14:15 in the attached file (sorry it's partly german..), but I guess this is not likely to be a real bug then (?).

Cd errors are very frequents, often due to incompatibility between the disk and the reader.
I suggest to close this report as invalid cause media-error.
thanks
