I tried to examine the issue. First of all I copied the "/usr/bin/y-ppa-search" script in my home directory:
cp /usr/bin/y-ppa-search .
then I did the command to run the script in trace mode:
sudo PS4='Line ${LINENO}: ' bash -x ./y-ppa-search
thence, after I inputed for searching "grep", I obtained the output trace and I discovered that script search for packages on following url: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+ppas?name_filter=grep
After that, I manually searched in browser, did cut & paste of above url and I discovered that ppa "savoury1/backports" (whit the alternative more recent "grep" version) isn't present in it. Therefore I suppose that the maintainer of this repository have forgot to reindexing the repository itself (if exist a similar procedure, I don't know).
