I'm a bit wary of comparing 12.04 with 11.04 since virtually every component changed between the two and so it is difficult to judge which single change triggers the bug.

There used to be an option on the login screen to select between window managers (and so choose composited/non-composited desktop), hopefully Bryce can tell you where that option is now found.
