Hi,
Having similar problem on a thin client with Intel 945GSE and Atom N270 CPU. We can only get up to 1280x1024 resolution although it supports up to 1920x1200.
X defaults to vesa and not intel driver.
Tried pci=noacpi and other workarounds mentioned here but no luck. Confirmed it is the same problem on Ubuntu/Kubuntu, both 11.10 & 12.04
When trying to run X :0 -configure we get configuration failed (see below),

The problem may be related to i915 failin to load? when trying to do manual 'modprobe i915' I get:
