Facing the same problem on both Ubuntu 12.10 and Ubuntu 13.04 on a Sony Vaio VGN-SR19XN (Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)). See below for the tested configurations.

Lionel, can you please file a separate bug for your issue? Chances are really high that it's a different underlying bug with similar symptoms. And since untangling bug reporter after the fact is messy we'd like to keep bugs separate until we're sure we're dealing with duplicates.

I have the very same problem.

When I connect the VGA connector, even if no monitor attached to it, Ubuntu just freezes. Nothing to do, completely hanged. Not even "Ctrl Alt F1" or similar. Just restart works.

I am on Ubuntu 13.04 with all the updates.

That sounds more like a firmware issue, I would suggest you look for a BIOS update first.
