Thank you Timo, for your comment. I attach for your information /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old and my /etc/X11/xorg.conf (cleaned from empty lines and comments). AFAICS, there is nothing suspicious in Xorg.0.log.old and as I said, the problem also occurs with an empty xorg.conf.
The machine does not have an optical drive. I will try and set up a boot of the hardy iso over PXE. In case I succeed, I will post the results here.
