After installing the updated driver, restarted X and went to the console and the computer already froze right there. With the stock gutsy driver this only happened after trying to get back into X. Instead of the login greeting, the screen showed a bunch of strange patterns in greyscale.
I restarted the computer and tried once more. The situation was now basically the same as always. Going to the VT console was possible as was a login. A complete restart of X was also possible, but going back to a running X session froze the computer with only a hard reboot as a way out.
I installed http:// launchpadlibrar ian.net/ 11689116/ xserver- xorg-video- ati_6.7. 197%2Bgit200802 01.bcd59010- 0ubuntu0tormod% 7Egutsy_ i386.deb for testing and the situation is more or less unchanged or possibly even worse.

Going back to feisty version.
