As the very first post mentions you won't get access to proper resolutions with the old Intel driver, at least on the i965/x3000 chipsets so it isn't a good solution for those people (including me) at least.

I think even on older chipsets it requires manual futzing with 915resolution to get access to resolutions which isn't exactly ideal.

I bought an Intel motherboard (and therefore processor) specifically because they released an open source driver and are (at least until AMD come through with the specs) the only people supporting open 3d. It is ironic that there doesn't seem to be much energy around getting the driver up to scratch, I'd have thought people would be all over it.

There used to be some regular posts from a Redhat employee on freedesktop.org who was working on getting XAA up to speed which may provide a way forward but I haven't seen anything for a while.
