I can confirm this happens on Karmic. Just yesterday I ran an upgraded system and as the Kernel was updated to 2.6.31-16, I could log in but only the wallpaper and mouse pointer was shown. The session was definitely Xfce session (GDM had two different Xfce session items, and I tried both), but still the problem existed.
I don't have any logs from the situation, sorry. A clean installation fixed this problem.
