For now, XFCE doesn't do well in a multiple user environment.

What is lacking is the ability to login as another user without logging out the current user. And of course, the system should provide a way to re-log to the first user's session.

Btw: having a fast user-switching applet (panel plugin) would be a plus but clearly not as important.

GDM can do that, even without explicit support from Xfce (IIRC). I don't have GDM installed, but I remember there was a command that spawned a new X server with a new greeter window.

After some poking around I found gdmflexiserver does what I need (thanks for the pointer!). I simply made a launcher to have a fast access to it. So it's ok for me now, but IMHO it still should be still be better integrated with the desktop. For example, by presenting an additional choice "switch user" when ending a session.

Also, as mentioned on another thread...

...switching via the LightDM DBus interface org.freedesktop.DisplayManager...

seems to be a much better option since it doesn't rely on Gnome.

There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates.
