I have the same problem with Xubuntu on an Advantech PCM3353 PC-104 with a 500Mhz Gedode LX and Frame buffer. Have been unable to restore.
1. Install 9.0.4 CD Image, login, looks fine.
2. Take all updates, reboot.
3. Login screen fine, but only pure light blue after (mouse pointer moves, though)
4. None of the sessions types work, (except ctrl-alt-F[1234, etc.])
5. Followed F2 workaround suggested above, cannot change desktop, window frames are maroon.
We must press forward, so I will be re-installing, will post more if I learn anything.
