Bug Description

It's greatly possible to set up a xcp-xapi server based on Saucy Salamander. XenCenter or OpenXenManager can connect succesfully to the this host and manage it. Linux based PVs can be set up and do run like a charm.

It's also possible to setup a Windows based HVM, but impossible to start it. There is just one error line, which looks always like this:

===
#/> xe vm-start name-label=desktop
The server failed to handle your request, due to an internal error. The given message may give details useful for debugging the problem.
message: Xenctrl.Error [ memory 15398472 KiB free; to be scrubbed 0 KiB; total 16280 MiB]: 1: Operation not permitted
===

Due to several user reports in the world wide web since spring 2013, it seems to be an issue since Xen 4.2 and consist up to now with Xen 4.3 in Saucy Salamander. Due to it's nature all Xen services do run as user "root" and well there is more than enough RAM in the server.

Which services do you mean? I have the same problem but no solution :( Where can I set the services to run as "root"?

All XCP/XAPI related services do run with root permissions, these are system services. I didn't change anything nor you have to change anything. There's no solution so far that, it's something inside.

Best hope, they fix it at least for Trusty.

Really bad is, no feedback at all on none of my XCP/XAPI related bug reports for Saucy.

Now, I have installed Ubuntu 14.04 Beta 1. The problem still exists. :( Why can no one help us???????
This problem is the show-stopper for me to use xen as hypervisor. I need to run Windows VM's!

Is there any other version of ubuntu where it actually works to create HVM domU's. This is really a show stopper for me aswell. If any of you have a workaround, please share.

 I have a thread at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2183067 which attempts to collate the disparate information available for setting up XCP/XAPI on Ubuntu,, and simplify and accelerate the install process.

 Hampus Prahl (hampus-n) (above) posted a link on my forum thread to this bug.

 This bug affects me also. It is incredibly frustrating, but it seems that it is not perceived as a problem by any of the Devs concerned, because XenServer works fine with Windows (and other) domU guests.

 I'm sure that it would be an educational experience for me to learn my way around a whole new (for me) open source OS (ie. CentOS/Red Hat/XenServer), but I have very little time available to me to relearn all the basics and switch host OS. I'd much prefer to stick with Ubuntu to this end, as my personal collection of bookmarks/notes/scripts/experiences are all centred around this OS.

 As time allows, I will try to chase down any information around this that I can and report back.

I will repost this comment to the aforementioned forum thread.

Rich.
