Unfortunately, as I feared, it is impossible to have different colored columns in the same row. I do agree it isn't attractive however, so I've reverted that and there is no red at all. I think perhaps this might be better.

A more subtle thing might be to change the background slightly as you say. Although it is tricky to know if it should be based on the amount sign or the total sign. For me, I am usually interested in the amount and not the total negativity, as most accounts are either always positive or always negative, but being able to easily distinguish between credits and debits is more useful.
