There is a Wubi log in your user temp folder (%temp%) please attach it here.

attached is the log..... additional info is that I can get around the crash by running wubi.exe in compatibility mode (run as win98/ME), but it doesn't seem to install correctly although it does complete.

the bug is valid and replicated on another box, so please change it to a valid bug.

What ISO did you use, was it CD, DVD or Alternate?

This is a wubi specific bug, nothing to do with general Ubuntu.
It looks like your last installation was successful. Anything different there?

It "appears" to have installed correctly after setting wubi to run in compatibility mode, but Ubuntu does not run and doesn't seem to have any way to run it.

I'm over it now so mark this bug however you wish.

This is probably a vairation of https://bugs.launchpad.net/wubi/+bug/210886. Unfortunately tracking segfaults in NSIS (wubi) proved to be quite challenging. I was trying to single out anything peculiar about your installation but the logs do not offer much hint and it is not something I can reproduce myself. I mark Ubuntu as invalid, because this bug is stricttly related to Wubi, so there is no need to take time off other Ubuntu devs, it does not mean of course that the bug is invalid per se', it is valid for Wubi.

I hear what you are saying and appreciate the feedback and explanation... HOWever, this is one reason most M$ users are relunctant to switch. Everytime there is a bug related to user experience, all we get is that it's not ubuntu, it's (fill in the blank). Another example would be the bug where window positions aren't remembered and all we get is that it's not Ubuntu, it's the problem of (name of program).

Let me just close in saying that although I love trying Ubuntu, and Linux has come a long way, there is soooo much room for improvement on some basic functionalities. Until those issues are addressed, competitiveness is null since we don't feel it's stable, we are always wondering if something is going to work every time we use it, and we are always questioning the ability of the OS to retain and preserve our personal data.

Do not misunderstand me, I am fairly tech-savvy and would like nothing more than to dump M$, but for now, M$ works everytime and at best, Ubuntu can only be a hobby.

Best of luck, and I do look forward to each and every release to see if you got it down yet.

Update:

This issue appears resolved in the copy I downloaded on May 18 from the University of California, Merced mirror. I verified it on all three machines I previously replicated the bug on.

Segfaults are not always reproducible (unfortunately). Could you check the md5 of the binaries/iso?

I was also getting this error. I got the error from both the "Install inside Windows" feature of the ISO and when using Wubi-8.04.1-rev506.exe. I have a Linksys wireless card and I discovered that if I either remove the card physically or disable it in Network Connections Wubi would finally install without error. Hope this helps.

Friend of mine has a similar problem... Newest wubi version and desktop ISO, no Linksys hardware physically connected to his PC, however, still crashes while installing. Logfile attached.
