When wubi runs it checks it's own release against that of the ISO. In this case the ISO is 12.04 and Wubi is 12.04.1.

The way wubi is coded, it will accept a 12.04.1 ISO with a 12.04 Wubi, but not the other way around. So the install fails. I would guess that the code was intended to be checking the other way around i.e. 12.04.1 Wubi can install a 12.04 ISO (which makes more sense in that the ISO of the 'flavours' aren't always updated with the LTS of Ubuntu.

Actually, most of the flavours (Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Edubuntu) were updated to 12.04.1, but the 12.04.1 version of Wubi.exe wasn't updated with their new Metalink addresses (still looking for the 12.04 ones) so they fail as well (bug 1067833)
