I got the same dark background with content when following your steps in r6857 on Ubuntu 13.10. It didn't show up immediately, but waited until the building was roughly 66% complete. I wonder if it related to the resizing of windows when a ware is removed from the list of building material.

I am not sure, but I don't think so. Could please file a separate bug report on this?
