Comment 6 for bug 661674

Hello from 2020. I've been having the same problem for years. I've just tried suggestions from #2 above. If I run from the command line while wicd interface shows "Obtaining IP address" :

iw dev wlan0 connect "ESSID"

then it does connect to the open network. However, I made the required change in wnettools.py, deleted wnettools.pyc and wnettools.pyo files, restarted wicd demon - but I'm afraid it still doesn't connect to open wifi networks. All a bit strange - or maybe there is a timing issue with the connection steps?
