Upgrade to 9.10 Karmic killed wireless connection

Wireless working in Jaunty. Did all the updates to get to 9.10 Karmic. Wired works fine. Wireless connects to AP but fails to draw an IP address, eventually timing out. Reinstalling network-manager made wireless work. Based on a discussion on Ubuntu Forums, I tried re-installing the latest version of Wicd from "http://apt.wicd.net karmic extras", Vers 1.6.2.2-1. Same problem. Back to network-manager for the time being.

Hardware is an Acer Aspire 3680 running the built-in Wifi unit.

The wireless connection worked fine initially. After a few weeks I couldn't get a connection. When I looked up the strength of the signal it was at 0. After looking deeper I saw that Ubuntu 9.1 on the laptop (an ACER9300 dual core) didn't see my wireless connection card (Atheros AR 5005G Wireless Network Adapter) but another totally different adapter which was unknown to me.
