I have the same problem at Ubuntu 12.04, wicd 1.7.2.3 . The problem started to appear after I changed my WPA2 password to 64 hex digits. SSID is all regular ASCII letters, no spaces. Sometimes it connects, sometimes doesn't. I wonder if there is a security risk (PSK generation failed, falling back to wireless key?!) and if any developer cares.
