"Randomly" suspend worked again on the affected laptop when connected via a usb wifi stick instead of the built-in broadcom card.

As I am also affected (probably) by https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/435352 I will continue my investigations and report back once Bug #435352 is solved.
