Just to give a little more detail, I am using:

Version 1.7.2.4-4.1 of the following:
- wicd
- wicd-cli
- wicd-daemon
- wicd-gtk
- python-wicd

Messages I get when first trying are:

Disconnecting active connections...
Wired network: Putting interface down...
