This begins to feel like a Catch 22. I raised the issue in the forum thread because it found it strange that the only way I could add a WWW field to a source was by going back to it AFTER creation (if I remembered to do it), and not in the initial window where it was first created.
It then became clear, through the discussion, (1) that the GEDCOM that is produced from this is not according to the standard. and (2) that there is a more legitimate place for this, namely the CALN field.
If we're now back to saying that standards-compliant code isn't all that important, then I'm also back to wishing that a WWW field be available at creation-time, although I think it would be better to keep to the standard, especially since there does not seem to be any compelling reason not do do so.

About the CAL issue: in the forum thread from November 2010 which was referred to in the current thread, It seemed that the only thing which might stand in the way of automatic creation of links was if it was a security issue, but nobody (including greg) could see any such issue.

And about this being admin configurable: yes, but currently, webtrees will with the default setting produce erroneous gedcom code. That's more serious than, say, allowing admins to do stupid things.
