Technically, there is a way, although it’s well hidden, and not functioning as designed…

The initial design called for a vertical swipe up on an open page in the activity view to close it, but because of bug #1187476 in the UITK, list items can only be swiped left/right to be removed. After discussing the issue with the design team, we decided that implementing something similar to the running apps in the dash (long press to enter close mode) was desirable, so I’ll use this bug report to track the implementation.
