Fixed in revision 1033 of trunk. 8.1.x shouldn't have this problem:

  Requiring vm-version in vm.el, which was accidentally removed in
  revision 903. Also removed the require of vm-vars from vm-autoloads,
  added by Brent Goodrick in revision 544.5.4. This should not be
  needed because vm-session-initialization loads it.
