Comment #5 is incorrect. VLC Bug #4437 has been active for over two years with this issue.
Initial server discovery takes five minutes +, title population can take hours.

Trying using XMBC instead. Use Video/Add files, select uPNP. The servers appear in seconds , the list just as quickly.
