Bug Description

Binary package hint: virtualbox-ose

Like i said here : http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=568710

With the official innotek package for feisty the seamless mode puts the taskbar of the virtualized machine (windows XP) above my kde taskbar.

I have installed Gutsy and the ose version of virtualbox and now the seamless mode hides the KDE TaskBar below the windows XP taskbar.

Is there any solution to resolve the problem ?

Thanks

P.S : In fact the ideal solution is that the fullscreen mode itself does not hide the TaskBar, since it's easy to switch desktops with the multiDesktop on wm in linux

I would say too that VirtualBox is THE killer feature to help users in my company (whose i am an admin) to switch to linux the less difficulty possible.
For this an usage of VirtualBox the most friendly possible for end-users should be an priority and this why i think that's it can be considered like a bug and would be great if it will be fixed for gutsy release.
In this way the ideal solution is to have the fullscreen mode hitself above the kde taskbar (if you have multiple desktop you put the virtual machine in one of them and only it and don't care of seamless mode in this desktop).

Thanks !

Perhaps other users don't agree with my mind for the fullscreen mode (a fullscreen mode should be in really fullscreen) and it's why i have report the bug for seamless mode : by minimum it's important to have seamless mode above the taskbar.

Sorry for multiple comments...

Are you saying that there's a bug with virtualbox-ose, that's not present in virtualbox (from virtualbox.org)?

Please try to clearly say what you think is buggy (and provide a way to reproduce it).

I've not tried using seamless mode yet, so I don't know what you mean exactly.

You may want to search for an existing bug (or even a patch) in the virtualbox.org bugtracker (you may want to start here: http://www.virtualbox.org/search?q=seamless&wiki=on&changeset=on&ticket=on)

Yes i confirm that with the official innoteck package (from virtualbox.org), the seamless mode don't hide the KDE taskbar. The Taskbar of the Virtualized Machine is just on the top of my Kunbuntu host Task bar.

The situation is different with ose version : The VM Taskbar (in fact i have just try with windows XP) hide my KDE Taskbar (i don't know for Gnome).

To reproduce the "bug" (in fact i think that's just a nasty problem of configuration, but it should be resolved) :
install virtualbox-ose, create a VM and install Windows XP SP2 on it, install the addition client.
Activate the seamless mode and enjoy to have loose your Kubuntu taskbar :op. Of course you can reactivate it by doing some advised click but it's not user friendly...

Thanks !

Is seamless mode only available for Windows XP guests?
It's grayed out when using Gutsy itself as guest. (I have installed the guest extension)

This bug affect All versions of Virtualbox, including the full version and virtualbox-ose version. In some rare circumstances, Virtualbox will put the Windows start menu above the gnome taskbar, but most of time it will hide it.

This bug was nominated for Gutsy but does currently not qualify for a 7.10 stable release update (SRU) and the nomination is therefore declined. According the the SRU policy, the fix should already be deployed and tested in the current development version before an update to the stable releases will be considered. With 7.10 now released, that policy applies to this bug. See: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates .

The bug is not being closed as work will continue on fixing it for the next release, Hardy Heron (8.04). To help improve the state of this bug see: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/HowToTriage and https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures .

This is fixed with Virtualbox 2.0. So seamless mode is now working again here on hardy with the binary 2.0.2 release and Gnome. The Windows taskbar is above the Gnome panel again. Great.

So probably the OSE of version 2.0 should also work again.

Can somebody confirm this for the OSE and also for KDE?
