This bug is much a less a bug of Variety, than of the respective DEs.

Variety cannot know what icon size it is supposed to provide to 10+ different DEs - there is no standard way to query the size of the panel. Nor should it worry about it, it is the responsibility of the desktop environment to normalize the provided icons (i.e. resize them, trim the edges, colorize their backgrounds, etc., etc. - whatever is necessary) in order to achieve a consistent look.

In XFCE the situation is absurd - if I set Variety to display the current wallpaper as icon (Preferences->Customize), it overtakes the whole taskbar. Why would the DE allow stuff like this at all. If I decrease the panel size to 16px, all the indicator icons get trimmed, and even the labels on the taskbar buttons get trimmed.

So, please take the time to report this bug to the respective DEs (with link to this bugreport here). For the time being I'll wait for their response before I do anything on Variety's side.
