But arguably, this should be fixed in the applications because they should not rely on the fact that the menu bar stays visible in fullscreen mode. For example, the human interface guidelines for Gnome 2 even recommend that the application hides the menu bar in fullscreen mode (see http://developer.gnome.org/hig-book/3.6/menus-menubar.html).

But it would still be nice if Unity had some discoverable way to make the menu bar visible again, as long as there are many applications that rely on the menu bar to leave fullscreen mode with the mouse.
