Oh no, messed up my comment. Here's the working version.
Workaround for basic users:
In a terminal, type:
sudo chmod +x /usr/share/applications/* ln -s /usr/share/applications ~/Applications
Then one can go to his home folder, than "Applications", then drag ones favourite application icons to the desktop. When done, one can delete "Applications".
