Having looked through Unity's source, I suspect that the black background may be caused by http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~unity-team/unity/trunk/view/2349/plugins/unityshell/src/ResultRendererHorizontalTile.cpp#L166

I am uncertain how to resolve it, however.
