Thank you for reporting this bug report to make ubuntu better. However it would be better if you discuss this in the Ayatana mailing list. This way you can discuss and explain about your idea better. Since this bug report requires input from the design team, I am marking it incomplete. But rest assured it will be looked into.

The Description info in .place file could be used as the hint for a lens. the trigger to show the hint should be moderate, preferably 2 seconds. The hint stays for 2 secs.

I've marked this as a design regression. In Unity 4, a new user clicks on the Dash and everything is made obvious to them in the Shortcuts lens. They can find apps easily.

In Unity 5 however, there seems to be no Shortcuts lens. The default lens on a fresh install is just blank by default. And there aren't even any tooltips for the icons at the bottom of the dash to tell you where to find apps. You just have to explore and click on each blindly to find apps. That's very bad for new users. Many of whom are bound to assume there are no apps installed, other than those in the launcher.

summary: - Suggest for Unity Lens hint
+ [regression] For new users, finding apps in the Dash on a fresh install
+ is much harder in Unity 5

I think this is a duplicate of Bug 962265 which has been (at least partially) fixed. The dash now displays icons for Thunderbird, Help, Rhythmbox, Calculator, etc under the "recently used apps" header. The "recently used" name is a bit strange, but maybe that was the only one available.

@Daniel van Vugt and @Yann Dinendal, the original bug report was suggesting to show hints when you hover over a lens icon. This is different from the bug report 962265 (Unity in 12.04 is impossible to use by a newbie because of the empty Dash at start). Hence I am removing the duplicate status and also reverting the description back to the original one.
