Bug Description

Presently, when a user opens the dash they land on the "Home" of the dash. At the bottom of the dash a user can select a search filter to search for only applications, for example. The visual ques are useful and aesthetically appealing but a helpful tooltip of descriptive text for each filter would go a long way.

+1 for tooltips.

specially useful for the apps (ratings and short descriptions of the icons you are viewing), files (file info, size and/or modified date; bigger previews!) and music lenses (and many other upcoming ones)

Definitely not. Completely ruins the simple and predictable design.

The request was mentioned to designers before and they pointed that:
- changing lens is not destructive, i.e clicking to see has no cost
- user testing didn't show it as being an issue

That's what I remember from a previous conversation, not an actual statement on what to do or not though, I will let them comment ;-)

yes, is not destructive, but you need to click.

tooltips avoid extra clicking. The brain can get the info with just a quick hover.

as for allowing tooltips in some lenses, for example the "file-lens" increases its usability and usefulness to the user without the need to open nautilus just to get this basic info: file size, modification date, etc..

anything that increases usability should be a little more than just wishlist.

We don't want an overlay on an overlay, so a tooltip is a non-starter.
However, it might be possible to work the name of the lens in as text
below the icon, visible only on hover. That would not interfere with the
focus indicator (the little triangle above the icon).

If you'd like to amend the bug title and description accordingly, and
perhaps post a flash/html5/animated gif mockup, we can consider this in
more detail.
