Bug Description

Maybe this is a feature, but I find it somehow strange. The last application launcher (the one before the workspace switcher) does not keep its position like the other launchers, it places newly opened applications *before* its own position. By default, this launcher is gnome-control-center, but if its launcher is removed, the last launcher will inherit the behavior.

To reproduce:
Clean all the apps already pinned to the launcher, including gnome control center
Pin five different aplications to the launcher.
Open a few aplications that were not pinned to the launcher (ex: opening from the dash)

What happens:
the 5th application does not keep its original position going to 6th, 7th, etc. This does not happen to applications placed between 1st and 4th position. This did not happen on ubuntu 11.04.

My system:
unity 4.22.0-0ubuntu3
ubuntu 11.10

I cannot reproduce this issue. Can you ensure you're running Oneiric with all updates installed? Thanks!

Also, could you try running unity --reset-icons and then re-try the issue, and see if it occurs?

Hello Bilal!

Yes, this is Oneiric with all updates available until:
xand@notebook:~$ lsb_release -r
Release: 11.10
xand@notebook:~$ cat /var/log/apt/history.log
Start-Date: 2011-12-01 09:23:21

I've tried the command you suggested, default icons came back but setting them again as described, the issue is still there. I'm adding two attachments with a situation almost as the described, but with six applications pinned, The first shows initial state, and the second what happens after opening the calculator from dash, when it goes before the last application instead of after.

I should say that this does not happen all the time, sometimes the icons do open after the last application pinned.

I tried your given steps as well and the issue did not happen in my case as well, here is what I did.

1. closed and removed all pined app launchers.
2. dragged 5 app launchers from the dash to the launcher
3. launched two no-pinned apps

they appeared below my fifth pinned app icon as they should.

Could you test the very same in a guest session and see if it happens there or verify if I missed something in the steps to reproduce the problem so that we could get the issue looked at.

Omer, tried with a guest session and the issue is still there. I uploaded another attachment where, from left to right:

1) sometimes the calculator goes the position where it should, which is after the last pinned app

2) sometimes it goes before...

3) ...and among other things, can cause a mess like this, leaving a gap between the last and second to last application

I still experience this issue on a fresh install of precise, running unity 5.10.0-0ubuntu6. https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/927170 is a recently reported and triaged duplicate of the bug. This behaviour is quite irritating, especially when using the num-key shortcuts to launch applications.
