Scratch my earlier comment #16. The reason why the performance of Unity was so terrible is bug #856233. The CPU frequency of my HP EliteBook 6930p was erroneously locked at 800 MHz.
Opening the dash is still takes roughly 200 ms. Even though I would love for it to be even snappier, it is acceptable for day-to-day use. If anyone is interested, the output of unity_support_test is all green and the OpenGL renderer is Gallium 0.4 on AMD RV620.
