Bug Description

Binary package hint: unity

There's some rendering artefacts in a tooltip. Specifically, it happens to File Manager. All other panel items didn't exhibit this behaviour.

I think you're right. It does seem to be some sort of video memory corruption. It doesn't happen immediately on boot but after about half an hour after I've run some applications. Happens to a different tooltip everytime, but once it happens that tooltip's stuck with the artefact until reboot. So I guess it does happen reliably

Strangely, it only happens to the tooltips (so far). Also, desktop effects in Maverick doesn't give any such artefact (that I noticed)

I'm removing the [ATI] tag seems people are getting some similar issues on icons with intel (see bug #685132)

[Problem]
Rendering corruption is seen in tooltips (see screenshots). This was reported by a user and reproduced by Jay who is one of the Unity/Compiz developers.

[Original Description]
Some lines appears above the tooltip when running Unity on an ATI gpu with the open source driver. It does not happen with other GPU. The problem is random and shows up on a few of the tooltips only.
To reproduce, move the mouse over the launcher icons (to bring up the tooltips) for a little while. It is best if you have many icons in the launcher. Shortly after, some tooltips will exhibit the problem.

Jay pointed me at this, and yeah this looks like a common -ati rendering issue, and is almost certainly a driver bug.

It is interesting that #685132 shows a similar error on -intel, but I've a feeling these two bugs are distinct (much of the rendering code is driver-specific). Even if they ultimately do share the same root cause, we may find it beneficial to treat them as independent driver bugs, until it is clearer where the fault is, just in case.

Can someone who reproduces this bug please run 'apport-collect 684992' to give us a set of X log files we can forward upstream?

So Unity caches the tooltip images?

Does this also happen with the r600g driver?

I want to add that I have seen a similar bug in Firefox 4.0 (beta 10) while running the classic gnome desktop. See the attached screenshot. When I move the mouse over the forward button, the tooltip shows up and exhibit the same problem. The forward button itself also features 2 vertical parallel lines.

Btw, Jay mentioned to me that he does still have this issue with current Ubuntu (which *should* be r600g unless Jay has specifically configured his system otherwise).

Jay, can you please post your current dmesg, Xorg.0.log, and screenshot of this tooltip corruption issue?

(Fwiw, I'm not able to reproduce this corruption with unity on RV770)

Keep trying newer versions of r600g and the kernel. Ideally you could find a small test that can reliably reproduce the problem. You might also try enabling tiling:
Option "ColorTiling" "Enable"
in the device section of your xorg.conf

Hi Tan Kan,

Can you please re-confirm this bug still affects oneiric?

There have been several other -ati artifact bugs that users are reporting they saw on natty but don't happen with oneiric so it'd be reasonable to guess this one got fixed as well.
