Binary package hint: unity
If you plugs second monitore to the box with unity, and opens gnome-display-
I guess unity was not designed for dual screen. I think it should have highest priority before it goes to 11.04, even it is wish.

I can't reproduce it here. Do you also experience that in the GNOME session? (try launching mutter --replace first in the GNOME session).
Can you also post the result of lspci in the command line here?
