I also like the version with the 32px icons better. I would additionally recommend to also create 32px versions of the special icons (applications, files, trash) as they are currently only available in 48px.

I would not to make the icons bigger (although as a simple user I would never dare to disagree with Mark...). In the current state, with the generous space around them, the launcher looks light and friendly. Making the icons bigger would certainly make it look crowded.
