I'm still getting this issue on Ubuntu 16.04. It is very annoying! When the screen goes to sleep, pressing any key will turn the laptop screen back on but neither the mouse or keyboard inputs appear to work on the login window. I can't press Ctrl+Alt+F1 either so my only option is a hard reset of the laptop.
