Bug Description

I have a laptop which has screensaved "naturally" due to timeout (most likely) and it is sitting there showing the lock screen but keyboard is still connected to the session, I can alt-tab to applications and via IRC i was able to send myself messages (blind) so clearly the keyboard is really operational.

the screen locking is done by unity, not lightdm. How do you notice that the keybinding are active, is there any visible effect? Does it happen every time?

affects: lightdm (Ubuntu) → unity (Ubuntu)

I am unsure if it is reproducible as yet. I noticed when the *'s did not appear on unlock attempt. I then noticed ALT-Tab was working, when it should not be. Then I sleected my IRC client and blind selected a private channel and sent myself a message, which I received on another machine.

This also just affected me.

Possibly-relevant detail from my environment: If I explicitly lock the screen and then also wait for a lock timeout, I somehow end up with two lock screens -- I unlock the machine, I can interact with the desktop for a few seconds, and then a second lock screen pops up. When I hit this bug, I'd unlocked the first lock screen but not the second.

Nelson, thanks; I believe the double-lock bug is tracked here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-screensaver/+bug/1292451

@Nelson: can you describe exactly what you did and what happened? the "lock again" issue is another bug as pointed in the previous comment

@seb128: I came back to my laptop after having locked it manually, and having had the lock timeout elapse.

I unlocked the screen, and started using the laptop. 5-10s later the screen locked, per #1292451. I typed my password again and hit Enter, and nothing happened. Trying again, I noticed that the password entry box was not filling up with *'s in response to my typing. I eventually noticed that I could send other keystrokes and get the window-chooser or workspace-chooser popups, suggesting that my keystrokes were going to the desktop underneath. I logged in on a tty and killed the lock screen, and discovered that my initial password+return had gone to the google talk window below, chatting my login password to a friend.

This happened to me once on a two monitor desktop.

I also have the two lock bug, and it happened after I had already unlocked the first lock. i.e. I entered my password, had a brief glance of my desktop and then got the lock again (normal), but the lock didn't show the dots when I tried to type my password.

Today I had a related instance of the prompt on the left not taking the input but the prompt on the right taking it.

This happened to me too a couple of times. The first lockscreen accepted my password, let me in for a second and then the lockscreen was presented again and from that prompt my password leaked to application with focus behind the locker. I removed light-locker package and didn't see the problem anymore... Until after a day or two bug appeared again and this time my password leaked to IRC.

It seems that Tahr wasn't so trusty. I changed to a different window environment a month ago and "surprisingly" haven't seen the problem since then. I'm wondering if this problem is still present, haven't been brave enough to test Unity since then...

Yes, has just happened to me - fully updated 14.04 this morning.

In my case it was an active Citrix remote session that was left capturing the keyboard when the screen locked itself- the lock screen could be clicked with the mouse, but the keyboard was typing into my Citrix session (so my password was passed into Citrix).

@Dave Jones the problem that you describe is almost certainly already reported as:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/1305586 (Lock screen is unusable when some windows have a keyboard/mouse grab)

I also think that this bug is a duplicate of Bug #1305586.
