Bug Description

If I drag a window above the top menu bar (Where the application indicators are) I can't not resize the window or get to its menu bar.

I have tried multiple window shortcuts to try to force it.

In the pix included, I dragged the Google Chrome window out of my way but its menu bar was behind the the desktop top bar. Can't seem to get it to resize or to get its menu bar.

Let me add that if I go into chrome and make Use system title bar and borders then the window popped back and will not be able to be dragged out of the desktop size.

So maybe this is something Unity 2d should work on if a software developer doesn't design with Unity 2d applications settings but definitely a Google Chrome issue needing to confine itself to the Unity 2d application settings and programming.

This issue if the first time since I changed to Google Chrome as my primary browser to reconsider Firefox, esp since Ubuntu one now syncs bookmarks, etc.

How did you drag the window out of the way in the first place?
Note that you can easily drag it back in view by keeping the Alt key pressed, clicking anywhere in the window and start dragging it.

OLIVER, In compact mode, Google Chrome will let you drag it as far as you can if you select the option in appearances to Hide system title bar and use compact borders. Sometimes I drag a window out of the way and if you look at the pix attached to my report above, you will see I lost the top area of chrome that has the max/min buttons. Another thing is Google Chrome does not give you a system menu in the top bar if you are in compact mode.

So I turned that off and used system title bars to avoid losing the controls BUT I prefer compact mode.

The "ALT" drag works to drag it back.

I did look everywhere for the Unity 2d shortcut lists including googling and have the desktop wallpaper set to the unity shortcut list. As you are aware not all the unity 3d shortcuts works for 2d.

Another thing that happened the other day is I clicked a Java script link to open a window in chrome from my banking website that forced the window to maximize without system bars and title bars and had no way to resize it or close the window. After I got OLIVERS response I went back to my banking website and re-clicked the link and tried to use the ALT to drag the window and it would not.

This may seems like small issues but these are problems everyday users could have that could stain the creditability Ubuntu unity desktop.

One thing I have seen since the last 2 updates in the last view days is that now if I click on Google Chrome in the launcher it does now pull up which windows are open and you can click your window of choice. That didn't work when I first filed my report.

I am sure this is more a Google Chrome application issue than unity 2d now. BUT unity 2d needs to give us an emergency way out if an application doesn't play nice especially since Ubuntu Oneiric is contemplating on Unity 2d in the next release if I am not mistaken.

If Alt works for you, you don’t need to turn compact mode off, that should be good enough to get windows fully back in sight. Note that this is specific to Google Chrome, what it allows you is somehow bypassing the rules established by the window manager, which is not a good thing overall for consistency. But in any case, Alt+drag solves the issue.

We are aware of the problem, and a number of bug reports have been opened to track each of them separately (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity-2d/+bugs?field.searchtext=shortcut). If you find shortcuts that are not implemented and for which there is no bug report, please file one!
When all the bugs are fixed, the list of shortcuts for Unity 3D and 2D will be exactly the same, the goal is to achieve a consistent user experience across the two environments.

Javascript resizing windows is broken code, and this banking website should be fixed.
Note that firefox allows you to forbid web pages to resize windows. Chrome apparently doesn’t have this option.

Agreed, we are dedicated to fixing every single usability issue, and your attention to detail is appreciated!

It should have worked back then, but in any case glad to know it works now and improves usability for you.
