Thanks for reporting the bug Paul.
The bad behaviour you describe is the fact that the background is white? If so, do you know what background image you use? Is it the default ubuntu wallpaper?

No my background is of an picture (jpg) and it not white - also not the default ubuntu wallpaper.
I have been looking around the web, and I'm thinking it might be to do with an incomplete install as I am running 64bit, which had an issue with the PPA I believe when I installed unity-qt.

Thanks for the answer Paul. Can you attach the wallpaper you are using to this bug report?

Ok, now that you have mentioned the wallpaper it has made a bit more sense.
I had a slideshow wallpaper active. If you choose one of the slideshow wallpapers available then it will cause the problem I was facing before. Now if I just use a static wallpaper everything behaves as it should do.

I've also had an issue with the white background, I believe it to be caused by using a .svg image file as the wallpaper, to test this I converted my wallpaper from an svg to jpg and everything worked as intended.
Hopefully this helps!

One could use the GnomeBG library available in the Ubuntu package libgnome-desktop-dev.

The APIs allow to be retrieve all the background parameters and to be notified when transitions happen. It also allows to load the background and to benefit from an on-disk cache.
