Bug Description

n.b. this bug is similar to bug #378396

I'm using Ubuntu 9.04 & Mozilla Firefox 3.5.3.

I connect to the Internet using a Vodafone Mobile Connect dongle (model: K3565 - Rev 2 (Huawei E220)); I usually connect to the Internet using the Vodafone mobile connect card software (version 2.00.00) instead on the Network Manager under gnome.

However doing this meant that I was unable to "Add your computer" to UbuntuOne as the web page concerned did not appear. After entering the following command into a terminal:-
                                               $ ubuntuone-client-applet --signup
the error messages that this command generated implied that I wasn't connected to the Internet!

So by switching to using Network Manager to start my mobile broadband connection I then got to see the "Add your computer" web page, after that I was then able to use UbuntuOne.

Please note I would prefer to use the Vodafone Mobile Connect Card software and not the Network Manager, so might this be possible in the Future?

Hi Galen,

Thank you for taking the time to submit this request and using Ubuntu One. As you've experienced, we currently require the use of the Network Manager. I'm adding this request to our Wishlist items so that it is considered for future development.

Thank you,

Joshua

I vote to upgrade the importance of this problem. NM is still really broken in 9.10. Any program that depends on it excludes the vast numbers of right-thinking people who refuse to use it.

Also, none of the ubuntuone-* packages depend on any of the network-manager-* packages. If it's really a requirement then the package dependency needs to be there.

Finally, some error messages would be helpful. If you start U1 from the GUI then all you get is a little cloud with an exclamation point. If you click Connect in Nautilus then it just says "Connecting ...". If it's not going to work and it knows it then it would be nice to say so.

mycl: Thanks for your follow up. We should have a fix for this available in our beta PPA soon: https://edge.launchpad.net/~ubuntuone/+archive/beta
