Hi cohnuh69. You can share with your friends by selecting a folder in the web UI, clicking on the 'sharing' tab, and sending them an sharing request via email. You can also share from the desktop by right clicking on a folder underneath the "Ubuntu One/My Files" area, and selecting "share on ubuntu one".
I like your suggestion for having a "sync now" command, and I'll leave this bug open about that feature request. I'm going to edit the description to match the "sync now" feature request.
