Thank you for taking the time to report the problem you're having Ramachandran. Do you ever get a web page asking you to "add your computer"?
In order to help us troubleshoot, can you run the following command in a terminal session and report the output here?
$ ps -ef | grep ubuntuone-
If it shows that ubuntuone-
$ killall ubuntuone-

OK, if you run the command below in a terminal session, do you still not see anything?
$ ubuntuone-
This will often output an error of some sort if the client is not starting up at all.

Hi Joshua,
$ ubuntuone-
epiphany: error while loading shared libraries: libwebkit-1.0.so.1:
cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Yeah it seems to be an error related to epiphany.

Hi Ben,
Do you get this error when clicking on URLs from other applications that then open Epiphany? If so, maybe you need to reinstall Epiphany? Let me know if you're able to fix this issue or still having problems.
One thing you might want to try (temporarily) is to set your preferred browser to Firefox to see if you still get errors.
Thanks,
Joshua

Joshua,
I think it's inappropriate to ask someone to change their default web
browser even temporarily. That being said, i changed my default
browser temporarily and it worked.
Please make ubuntuone work with epiphany.

It is not innapropriate to ask people to try different things in order
to diagnose a bug report. If epiphany does not work with xdg-open it
is not an ubuntu one problem to fix.

At least u1c should show a message when something unusual happens and not eschew errors silently.

Hi,

Since I had also initial problems I had a look into the source.
In my version ubuntuone-
in bin/ubuntuone-
def do_xdg_
"""Utility method to run xdg-open with path_or_url."""
ret = subprocess.
if ret != 0:
IMHO logging is not enough. Especially since it is absolutely unobvious
to endusers, that the logfiles of the ubunutone-client applet will end up
in $HOME/.
Although in my case I didn't use epiphany, the function above should
be improved in that way, that it pops up a message with path_or_url if
ret is 2, 3, or 4. From the man page of xdg-open:
2 One of the files passed on the command line did not exist.
3 A required tool could not be found.
4 The action failed.
Regards, Peter

Elliot,
I think it was known ahead of time that using firefox would work
around the problem; meanwhile the real bug goes unfixed. Popcon shows
that a lot of people have epiphany installed, and if someone is
running it it's probably because they prefer it over firefox. I want
my browser properly supported, and it's a popular browser. Suggesting
xdg-open is a red-herring, and it shows a casual disregard for the
issue at hand.
When you have the name "ubuntu" in your name, there's a lot to live up
to. I expect that it works with ubuntu, and my ubuntu includes
epiphany.

Had the same problem. Using:
$ killall ubuntuone-
$ ubuntuone-
worked fine for me.
The client was running beforehand but not showing the icon in the upper panel.

Peter, wiz, you are absolutely correct and we are planning to add a user-visible error message in cases where xdg-open fails.
Ben, mentioning xdg-open is not a red herring nor does it show disregard for the issue at hand; it is central to understanding the problem. Popcon is irrelevant; Epiphany is a supported browser. You have not yet answered the question: does running xdg-open http://

Elliot,

Ben, you are the first person I've ever seen throw a strop because the problem appears to be in neither Application A nor Application B but the Application C which connects them. Not only are you being rude to someone helping you who clearly knows better than you how to diagnose a problem, but you're also being selfish by refusing to co-operate and maybe help others who are having the same issue as you.
I've already signed up and authorised this PC but when I sign up on my other one I'll set Epiphany as my default browser first and report back what happens. Maybe we can replicate your bug.
Ben Asselstine (benasselstine-deactivatedaccount) wrote : | #22 |
FYI It's a bad idea to call customers rude. I hope the bug can be
replicated, and that customer service can improve for future
customers. Unfortunately I won't be one of them.

Hi Ben,
I'm sorry you are leaving under these circumstances. I'd like to explain a couple of things:
Gavin is not one of the core ubuntu one developers, he is a user of the service. I just want to be clear that it's another user who was expressing his opinion that you were behaving rudely, not one of the ubuntu one developers.
While I absolutely don't want to argue with users, I felt compelled to challenge your statements about it being inappropriate to ask someone to temporarily change their default browser and that xdg-open was a red herring (along with the implication that epiphany was unsupported) because this bug report is public, and many people read the bug reports and form opinions based on the information stated in them. If l didn't correct the information, many others could be left with an incorrect understanding. I want it to be clear to anyone reading the bug report that we do support epiphany, and that we are trying to support any browser the user has configured by opening URLs with xdg-open.
Finally, ubuntu one is still in beta and we definitely acknowledge that there are still plenty of bugs. In the last week we've had over 10,000 new users join the service, at the same time as we've had 3 totally independent and separate bugs which all manifested with almost identical symptoms. So when we ask people to do things like change the default browser or perform other diagnostic actions, it's not with the intent of making people jump through hoops or deflect the real problems, it's with the intent of trying to be sure we identify *all* the bugs and handle them appropriately even though the symptoms on the surface may be identical to other bug reports. It's definitely a lot more work for the beta testers than it will be for the users once all is polished and working smoothly, but I'm convinced that getting as many people involved as possible with beta testing is the fastest route to having everything work smoothly in the Karmic release. I hope you'll try the service again in the future :)
Same for me. Launching it from terminal shows just nothing.
