That is, setting "Edit Connections"->"<VPN Connection Name>"->"IPv4 Settings"->"Method=Automatic (VPN) addresses only"->"Search Domains" to contain the string "." should correctly set the routing-only domain for that connection (the network config file for the VPN connection I showed above DOES correctly contain the line "dns-search-.;", but as shown above, nothing happens. Instead, I think it gets invalidated and thrown away during parsing as a non-domain ....somewhere (I really can't find where) and is not passed to SetLinkDomains in nm-systemd-resolved.c. I have attempted to trace the parsing of this dns-search label through the network manager but honestly I have no clue where it happens. This should be an easy fix though for someone familiar with the workings of the network manager dns-manager. Thanks for your help, I believe that allowing the valid use of "." to optionally specify the routing-only domain is the optimal solution.
