I wanted to post here to confirm that this has been fixed on the following configuration:

Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
Kernel 4.4.0-145-generic
VirtualBox 6.0.6 r130049

The key here was the fix of (https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/18315) in VirtualBox 6.0.6, released on April 17, 2019.
